What is a maltipoo?

Are you thinking of buying a maltipoo, or are you just curious what it is? A Maltipoo is a hybrid breed created by crossing a Toy- or Miniature Poodle with a Maltese. The breed has become popular in recent years due to its hypoallergenic coat, intelligence and inherent devotion—which makes it desirable for many people.

Maltipoos are playful and social animals, known for their cuddly nature and willingness to get along with humans, so they tend to make good companions. They can range in size from 6 to 14 pounds depending on the type of Poodle used in their breeding. As a general rule, Maltipoos usually have an adult coat color that is slightly lighter than their puppy coat color. They normally have coats of white, cream, beige or apricot shades, which may be solid or spotted. All varieties of Maltipoo will have a wavy or curly coat that is non-shedding and low maintenance.

Maltipoos are also very intelligent and easy to train because both breeds within the hybrid—the Poodle and the Maltese—are considered to be very intelligent dogs. These toys weigh between 6 to 14 lbs (2 - 6 kg) when full grown and generally live 10–15 years if given proper nutrition and exercise. The exercise needs for a Maltipoo will depend on its individual temperament; some dogs need more exercise than others to stay healthy. The ideal exercise program consists of regular walks plus playtime indoors or outdoors as well as activities such as swimming or fetching balls so they can express their natural energy level properly away from home.
